Avalanche Atlas

The Avalanche Atlas provides a centralized view of all known avalanche paths. From this page, you can search and review existing paths or create new ones. Avalanche paths are integrated into the following:

  • While creating an Avalanche Observation, you can autofill an avalanche path.
  • Avalanche paths are displayed on the map when in Avalanche Mode.

Accessing the Avalanche Atlas

Using the Navigation menu: Go to Avalanche > Atlas.

đź’ˇ Tip: You can also access Avalanche Atlas through the dashboard shortcut or the search shortcut as well.

Creating a New Avalanche Path

  1. Click the New Avalanche Path button on the Atlas page.
  2. Fill in the required details in the blank form.
  3. Click Submit.
  4. Your new path appears in the table—click it to open its detail page, where you can Edit or Delete.

Upload Geometry (Basic Tier)

Basic accounts cannot draw geometry in-app. You must upload pre-created geometry files:

  1. On the Avalanche Atlas page, click the Settings icon (upper right).
  2. In the upload module, click Upload File.
  3. Drag-and-drop (or browse for) a KML, GeoJSON, or Shapefile (ZIP).
  4. After upload, click Show on Map.

Alternatively, upload via Settings > Import:

  1. Go to Settings > Import via the Navigation menu.
  2. Select Geospatial Data.
  3. Upload your KML, GeoJSON, or Shapefile (ZIP).
  4. Click Show on Map.

Note

The full_name is used to match your new avalanche path's name. The import will walk show what names were extracted from the files.

Draw Geometry (Advanced Tier)

Advanced users have all the capabilities of Basic users and can create and edit geometry directly in SnowObs.

From the Avalanche Atlas page

  1. Click New Avalanche Path.
  2. Complete path details and click Submit.
  3. On the detail page, switch to Edit Geometry. This will take you to the main map for editing.
  4. Use the drawing tools to outline the path and drag vertices for precision.
  5. Click Save to finalize.

From the Map view

  1. Switch to Avalanche Mode on the map page.
  2. Click the âž• button on the upper right corner of the page.
  3. Select Atlas Path, draw the avalanche path, then click complete.
  4. Fill in the required details for the new avalanche path.
  5. Click Submit

Editing Existing Avalanche Paths

Paths can be updated for metadata and geometry.

From Avalanche Atlas

  • Select a path in the list.
  • Click Edit to change details or geometry.

From Map View

  • Switch to Avalanche Mode.
  • Click a path polygon on the map.
  • Edit details or redraw geometry on the detail page.

Geometry Editing

  • Basic Users: follow the same upload steps under Upload Geometry (Basic Tier)”.
  • Advanced Users: use the in-app drawing tools as described above.
